History and Native American Culture Outreach Programs

These programs are designed to fulfill several goals of the California State History-Social Science Framework.Please refer to the school program reservations and policies before booking a program or tour.

Methods of the Maidu (3rd-6th grades)

This program introduces students to the traditional culture of the Valley Nisenan. Included will be a PowerPoint presentation depicting examples of pre-1850's life, including acorn preparation and hunting techniques. Students will examine replica artifacts during the hands-on portion of the program. Emphasis is placed on the Valley Nisenan living in balance with the natural environment. This program is also a prerequisite for the Maidu Field Day and is included in the cost for that program.

Pioneer Children (2nd-4th grades)

This program introduces students to pioneer life from a child's point of view. A PowerPoint presentation timeline, and special activities help children become familiar with pioneer life at home, school and play. Students will examine pioneer toys during the hands-on portion of the program and will gain an understanding of the risks and rewards of living close to the land.

Gold Discovery (4th grade)

Through gold panning, a PowerPoint presentation, and role play, students explore the changes brought to California by the discovery of gold. Students will participate in a timeline to learn the multi-cultural story of the 49ers. The origins of placer gold and mining techniques are also brought to life in your classroom. Bringing yesterday into today, the naturalist will guide students through an exploration of gold rush impacts on the environment and native cultures of California. Students will learn simple gold panning techniques and test their new skills while panning for gold.
