The Nature Center is landscaped with native plants and offers insight into traditional plant uses by humans and wildlife.
The Nature Center is part of a 77-acre nature preserve with riparian and oak woodlands, shrub lands, meadows, and aquatic habitats. Many wildlife species, deer, squirrels, wild turkeys, rabbits, snakes, hawks, owls, woodpeckers, songbirds and waterfowl can be seen from the three self-guided walking trails.
The Nisenan Maidu people lived along the American River hundreds of years before the arrival of European settlers. Travel back in time by strolling through the replica Nisenan summer village complete with tule shelter, grinding rock, acorn granary, fire pit, and shade shelter.
The Nature Center is home to a few special animals who provide an opportunity to teach visitors about the kinds of wild animals that live in this area--sometimes in our own backyards!
